  Jack Ma, founder of e-commerce giant Alibaba, has spoken out on social media in recent days in support of the Chinese work practice known as "996." The number refers to working from 9 am to 9 pm six days a week and is said to be common among the country's big technology companies and start-ups.

  "If we find things we like, 996 is not a problem," Ma said in a blog post Sunday on Chinese social media site Weibo. "If you don't like [your work], every minute is torture," he added.

  Ma's comments prompted criticism from Chinese social media users.

  Mr Liu, who started the company that would become JD.com in 1998, recently wrote about his attitude to work, saying he used to set his alarm to wake him up every two hours to make sure he could offer his customers a full, 24-hour, service.

  He wrote: "JD in the last four, five years has not made any eliminations, so the number of staff has expanded rapidly, the number of people giving orders has grown and grown, while those who are working have fallen.

  "Instead, the number of slackers has rapidly grown! If this carries on, JD will have no hope! And the company will only be heartlessly kicked out of the market! Slackers are not my brothers!"

  @era--vulgaris

  In other words, indentured servitude. Anything over 10 hours a day or 8 hours a day + a long commute, and you're effectively living at work.

  No free time except on the weekends, and even then you're spending one of those days off doing all the myriad work at home that you couldn't do during the week because you basically wake up, work, and go back to bed.

  @tw11n

  12hr work day, sure, and 3 day workweeks. Otherwise, Jack Ma seems disoriented and might need help.

  @EvilPhd666

  This is how you burn people out.

  There are certain industries and job natures that can allow 12 hour days, but they are usually highly technical in nature, pay damn decent, and they rotate between 3 and 4 day work weeks. That means they respect time for rest and has a generous work/life balance.

  Jack Ma is killing his workforce. I suppose no one ever gets that rich without gross exploitation.

  @Procyon

  This is the best news since Jeff Bezos' divorce and here is how to become a billionaire:labor exploitation.

  @Magus

  Someone leading their own up start-up could work 72 hours a week, sure.

  But an employee?

  That's over 128 hours of overtime a month, much higher than the Japanese sky-high ceiling of 100 hours a month.

  As for Ma himself, he told reporters in a 2017 interview that he regretted working so hard and being unable to devote enough time to his family. “If I could live again, I would absolutely not have a life like this,” he said.

  Long workdays in the high tech sector are not unique to China. Tesla co-founder Elon Musk has previously said he worked up to 120 hours per week when the electric vehicle maker struggled with production delays.

  "There are way easier places to work, but nobody ever changed the world on 40 hours a week," he posted on social media site Twitter in November last year.
